Are you still developing from the ground up with Javascript?

Javascript is a great platform for control of code, but it’s a time-consuming application development environment. What if you could do the same job in a tenth of the time?

You can with low-code environments like Oracle Application Express.

Saving time, money, and resources with low-code development

Low code environments come from RAD, or Rapid Application Development. These environments have been around for a while—Visual Basic PowerBuilder, Oracle Forms and Delphi among others all aimed to lower programming time.

At the 1997 WWDC keynote, Steve Jobs explained a remarkably prescient vision of the future for application development. “The way you get programmer productivity is by eliminating lines of code you have to write,” he said. “Right? The line of code that’s the fastest to write, that never breaks, that doesn’t need maintenance, is the line you never had to write – right? So, the goal here is to eliminate 80% of the code that you have to write for your app. That’s the goal.”

In the 1990s there were some environments that allowed this, but with the explosion of apps people went back to Javascript and more traditional code-based development. That’s changing again.

Low-code development carries a wide variety of benefits that writing an entire application doesn’t. Sure, you might have more control over it. But if it’s done ten times faster, is it worth it?

Not only that, you can still use that low-code environment to build up an application with a combination of code and WYSIWYG. If you want to spend resources on it, you can strip down that application to a smaller footprint. But you can make something that works without an issue.

Making applications with Oracle APEX

Developers often write their applications from scratch, but it’s easy to save a lot of time. And that’s what the low-code environment helps with.

When you design an application with a low-code environment like APEX, you have to take care of two things: security and the uniqueness of the application. But something like APEX removes the guesswork and the extra work that goes with security so you only have to worry about making the application unique.

APEX will stop SQL injection attacks and other URL issues that can let people into the back end of your site. If you’re designing applications through APEX, it will scramble URLs and keep some of the major attacks out.

With APEX, you can pick different themes and build enterprise level database applications that can be used by thousands of users concurrently. It’s like buying a prefabricated house—there’s electrical, plumbing, a framework and everything set up for you already. All you have to do is add the finishing touches.

Those finishing touches usually take a fair bit of time, coding and maintenance. Even though you’re buying something that’s kind of prefabricated, it’s largely done. Jobs often quote on code and developers have to write the same code over and over and build on top of it.

You can focus on just building the unique parts, not the parts that can be made over again. That’s what a low-code environment can do for you.
