You might have noticed over the last few years that many companies are moving to cloud-based solutions over traditional on-site installs.

A lot of companies are trying to figure out whether or not they should stick to traditional financial applications or move over to the cloud. But that’s a major undertaking. Modern cloud applications have far more capabilities than their older counterparts, can update more frequently and add features on a more regular basis. They can be hard to transition to though.

Why move to Oracle Fusion Apps?

Oracle’s old EBS has not moved with the times the same way the current cloud application has. The UI is more cluttered, the tools not as frequently updated. It’s a legacy piece of software that’s still being maintained, but not given the same attention as the current generation.

You’ll get innovation and new features on a regular basis. But that comes with some tradeoffs.

Challenges of moving to a cloud-based environment

Implementing an ERP is difficult at the best of times. It’s definitely a challenge for businesses that have grown used to doing things a certain way.

You’ll need to implement new security standards. Doing business online opens you up to avenues of attack you didn’t have before, and you’ll need to implement procedures you might not have had before. Oracle has good security standards but you need to safeguard it the same way you would have if you had an on-site install.

Customizing your ERP introduces more vulnerabilities, and you need to be aware of that. Make sure you have the right monitoring and security reviews in place so you’re not caught out.

Also, Oracle ERP Cloud didn’t start out very configurable. That’s changing but if you need heavy customization it may be more effective to stay with something on-site you can build the way you like.

Many people may resist the change of moving from an on-site installation to Oracle Fusion Apps too. They may be worried about losing jobs or not being able to use the new system, especially if they’ve built their career around learning the ins and outs of that old system. Make sure you communicate clearly with them and ease their fears.

It’s also just a technical challenge moving that volume of data to a cloud-based ERP. Make sure you have the appropriate staff on hand who can help you make the transition and have a plan in place.

Migrating to Oracle Fusion Apps over an onsite application may be challenging, but you’ll see the results eventually. You’ll find that it’s often worth moving to cloud software even if it takes some time to get right in the short term. In the long term, the features, benefits and increased speed of updates will help your business get to the next level.
